WRITEUP
CAPESIZE
The market continued its upward trajectory today, with another strong move higher in both basins. The BCI 182 5TC jumped $3,632 to $54,801, while the C5 increased $1.475 to $17.980 and C3 gained 0.532 to $40.805. The Pacific was firm and busy, with all three major C5 miners active in the market. Following yesterday's talk of $17.00 being fixed, operators were said to be bidding around $17.00 from the outset, while owners remained bullish with offers above $18.00. As the day progressed, reports emerged of one miner paying in the very high $17s, followed by another reportedly fixing at least four vessels between $17.90 and $18.00. A third miner was also reported to have been fixing around the $17.90 level multiple times. In the Atlantic, sentiment remained firm, with North Atlantic fronthaul demand well supported and tonnage looking increasingly tight. After several fixtures at around $40.00 from South Brazil and West Africa to China yesterday, the C3 market was slower to get going initially. However, reports of $41.00 for mid-October quickly set the tone, with bids improving to around $40.80 against offers closer to $42.00.

PANAMAX
The trans-Atlantic market presented mixed sentiment today, with opinions divided regarding its near-term direction. Brokers reported that, while trading activity has remained relatively busy over the past few days, cargo volumes have not been sufficiently replenished, creating an increasing imbalance in underlying market fundamentals. Market participants have once again highlighted the preference among many Owners, particularly those with vessels opening in the North Continent and West Mediterranean, to keep their tonnage trading within the Atlantic basin rather than seeking opportunities elsewhere, which has the potential to add further pressure to P1A levels. The Eastern Heather (82,270 2022) open Safi 8 September was said to have been placed on subjects for a US Gulf grains fronthaul trip with ADM. The Tiger East (76,212 2013) open South China 6 September was said to have fixed basis passing Singapore for an EC South America round trip at $20,100 to Bunge. The Pacific market was reported to be active once again today, with multiple fresh fixtures emerging at levels surpassing previous fixtures. Demand for Australian and Indonesian coal cargoes remains robust, while prompt tonnage is said to be attracting significant interest, resulting in increasingly firm sentiment across the basin. The P5TC increased by $248 today to close at $22,113.

SUPRAMAX
The market appeared to be flat everywhere except North America, which again saw healthy increases in the Index, but very few reported trades so far. The 11TC average gained another $141 to close at $21,090. The Continent remained steady with sufficient scrap demand, but the Mediterranean continued to disappoint with limited fresh enquiry without a vessel as backstop. The South Atlantic was said to be positional with larger units still benefitting from the recent rise in the Panamax rates and South African activity has seen rates tick up slightly. In the Pacific sentiment was positive in the North driven by backhauls and longer rounds via NoPac and Australia, whilst Indonesia appeared quieter with rates seemingly easing a little. There was talk of a 58,000-dwt open Nagoya fixed for 7 to 9 months at $18,000, but nothing more emerged, the Usanee Naree (66,337 2021) Bedi 7-8 September was said to be on subjects to Classic for a trip via EC South America to the Far East at $24,000 and an Ultra was rumoured fixed South Africa to China at around $26,000 plus $260,000 ballast bonus, but no further details surfaced.

HANDYSIZE
The market recorded an active trading day, with gains varying across the regions. The BHSI increased by 6 points to 893, while the 7TC average rose by $108 to close at $16,082. In the Continent and Mediterranean rates appeared to be firming gradually, while activity in both the US Gulf and South Atlantic remained healthy, supported by a balanced supply of tonnage and cargo across the key loading regions. In the Pacific activity also gained momentum, with several fixtures reported above previous levels. The period market was active as well, with an update on the Frida Bulker (40,161 2023) open Zhoushan fixed for one year at $17,500 by Damico, while the Chang Yang Jin Hua (34,961 2011) open ex dry dock Zhoushan 10–15 September was placed on subjects for one year at $13,400.

Atlantic

In addition, the Nisa Naree (39,000 2015) was fixed from SW Pass to Santo Tomas with grains at around $12,500 by Cetus, while the Sopot (39,035 2019) heard fixed from SW Pass to Continent with grains at around $16,000 to $16,750 by Bunge, but lacking further details. In addition, an eco 28,000-dwt vessel was reported fixed from Recalada to Spain–Portugal with grains at $19,000, although further details were lacking.

Asia
