WRITEUP
CAPESIZE
The Capesize market began the week with a reasonable flow of West Australia cargoes from both miners and operators in the Pacific. Despite public holidays in Korea and China, activity persisted with fixtures reported in the high $13s and low $14s across a range of loading windows. The C5 index eased by $0.40 to $14.025. Meanwhile, the Brazil/West Africa market continued to soften after fixtures were reported around $37.00 late last week, resulting in the C3 index falling a further $0.80 to $36.850. After both routes lost around $1,700, round voyage earnings on the China-Brazil/West Africa route remained above those of the transpacific run. Further market discussion emerged from the Atlantic, including a handful of Newcastlemax fixtures from Friday, though these were not necessarily concluded at firmer levels. The BCI 182 5TC posted a loss of $1,898 to $43,833 today.
Atlantic
Vale took a vessel for 160,000/10 PDM to Ijmuiden 1/10 November at $19.50. Vitol was rumoured to have taken the Cape Magnolia (181,461 2011) for 185,000/10 Nouadhibou to Qingdao in end October at a rate in the high $30s. A Newcastlemax was linked to Anglo’s 190,000/10 Saldanha Bay to Qingdao 24/30 October at a rate in the low $27s.
Asia
There was talk of BHP taking a vessel for 160,000/10 Port Hedland to Qingdao 22/24 October in the very low $14s. Rio Tinto fixed a few vessels for 170,000/10 Dampier to Qingdao from 17 Oct onwards at $13.95.
PANAMAX
Market sources today reported slower fixing activity across both basins, with the P5TC declining by $76 to $21,273. Trans-Atlantic and fronthaul business is said to be characterised by a wide bid-offer spread, with both Owners and Charterers showing less willingness to close the gap as participants take stock of their positions in an effort to gain a clearer sense of market direction. Some brokers have suggested that tonnage is beginning to build off the North Continent, a development which could weigh on rates should demand fail to improve. Others, however, argue that the headline tonnage count is misleading, noting that the number of vessels genuinely available and not already pencilled in for cargoes presents a more balanced picture. Activity in the Pacific is similarly subdued today due to the various national holidays across the region. Despite the quieter trading environment, market fundamentals are said to remain fairly evenly balanced. Indonesian demand continues to be relatively limited, although Australian demand is still reported to be providing a steady source of enquiry and is helping to support a generally positive sentiment among Owners.
SUPRAMAX
The usual slow start to a new week, with collection mode evident the 11 TC average today was $22,620, up just $1 from Fridays close. There was a rumour of a well described 64,000-dwt coming from Chile being on subjects basis delivery Recalada for a trip Singapore-Japan range at $20,000 plus $1,000,000 ballast bonus, reinforcing the firm tone in the South Atlantic. There was little reported elsewhere in the Atlantic, although the US Gulf slide a little lower in the index and the Mediterranean remains subdued. In Asia, NoPac and backhaul demand continues to support the market, which in turn has fuelled period activity. The Belfast (63,685 2021) prompt in the Philippines fixed a trip via Indonesia to Thailand at $25,000 and the Uniwell (52,454 2006) fixed delivery Salalah for a trip EC India at $18,000, but in both cases the Charterer was not revealed. The BBG Guilin (61,189 2021) Zhoushan 5-10 October fixed 5 to 7 months in the mid $23,000’s, again to an unnamed interest.
HANDYSIZE
The week opened quietly across both the Atlantic and Pacific markets, with participants largely in a collecting mood. No fresh activity emerged from the US Gulf or South Atlantic, where fundamentals remained relatively soft. A 29,000-dwt vessel was heard fixed for a trip from Walvis Bay to China with concentrates at $14,000, although further details were not confirmed. The Continent and Mediterranean maintained a flat tone, with fragile but broadly balanced fundamentals. The Pacific market also began the week on a slightly softer note, with little change in conditions and no clear direction emerging. The UM Mogami (40,631 2026) open Ningde was fixed for a backhaul trip to the Continent with deck and project cargo in the mid-$21,000s. The Kangting (37,440 2020) open Busan prompt was fixed by Pangaea for two to three laden legs, with the first leg carrying cement to the US West Coast, at $19,000, although further details were not disclosed. Reflecting these regional differences, the BHSI slipped by 3 points to 1,004, while the 7TC average fell by $50 to close at $18,067.
