WRITEUP
CAPESIZE
A slightly mixed albeit mostly positive day for the market, with the BCI 182 5TC gaining $950 to close at $46,601. The Pacific remained steady but positional, with two miners active and good volumes continuing to emerge amongst operators. C5 firmed by 0.300 to $15.545, while C3 was relatively flat, easing 0.150 to $37.405. The Pacific started on a firm footing, with offers indicated around $16.00 to the mid-$16s, before becoming increasingly positional as the day progressed. Earlier ETAs were reported to have achieved a significant premium, with $16.00 to low-$16s said to have been paid, although details remained sketchy. Elsewhere, one miner was bidding $14.80 and reportedly paid $14.90, while a second miner was understood to have fixed in the mid-$15s. In the Atlantic, the North Atlantic remained firm, while activity in the South Atlantic was quieter, with a widening gap between bids around $36.00 and offers closer to $38.00 creating a more subdued feel. Overall, the market retained a positive undertone, with firm North Atlantic conditions and a positional Pacific providing support, although the lack of activity and widening bid-offer spreads on C3 tempered the day.
PANAMAX
Another positive day overall, although slightly lacking in conviction, the P5TC average was up $419 to close at $20,632. Sources said the South Atlantic experienced a slow start due to a paper sell off, but soon kicked back into action with P6 now around $22,000, whilst the North Atlantic appeared to be in a standoff as Owners saw no reason to reduce their offers, and Charterers so far mostly reluctant to chase rates higher. The Pacific continued to strengthen driven by NoPac grains and East Australian minerals for the larger units, whilst Indonesian demand slowed and continued to take the smaller LME's, but with the recent jump in EC South America Owners remain bullish. The Africa Graeca II (82,712 2026) was reported fixed retroactive Qinzhou 16 August via EC South America back to the Far East at $23,100 to Bunge, but a source suggested the rate was in fact $24,000 which was unconfirmed, and the Dream Team (84,861 2020) open Xinsha 1st September fixed a Pacific round at $26,000, but there were no further details.
SUPRAMAX
Another predominantly sideways day with the 11TC average only up $5 to $20,789. There was little of note to report in the Atlantic, but the transatlantic run from US Gulf rose the most with demand said to be strengthening as the week has progressed, conversely the inbound S4B route has unsurprisingly gone the other way. Rates in the South seem to be holding, helped by the large discount that Ultra's are against Kamsarmax currently, whilst the Continent is said to be steady with more scrap demand but the Mediterranean remains in the doldrums. In Asia sentiment remains positive with NoPac grains still very active and a steady flow of period trades being concluded. The Afros (63,223 2018) prompt Tianjin was on subjects to Agrocorp for a trip via NoPac to Bangladesh at $22,500 (scrubber benefit for Charterers) and the Jiu Xu 56 (56,756 2011) open Hong Kong fixed a round via the Philippines with nickel ore in the high $18,000's basis South China/high $19,000's basis North China, possibly with Full Glory. The Zhong Chang 228 (57,041 2011) open Davao went on subjects for the same trade at $21,700 South China/$22,700 North China and the Poly Odyssey (56,582 2011) Qinzhou also fixed via the Philippines with nickel ore to China in the mid $18,000's. The Pacific Apex (63,667 2021) Pipavav 1-3 September was reported on subjects for a trip via Richards Bay to South East Asia at $15,750 to Opulence, although this rate looked questionable, as many expected it to be higher.
HANDYSIZE
A very quiet Thursday with limited rumoured trades to give any inclination of market direction. The BHI was down 1 to 905 and the HS7TC average dropped $25 to settle at $16,290. Sources said the US Gulf is softening with rumours of a transatlantic trade in the low/mid teens, however further details were not available, whilst the South atlantic also appeared weaker a with rumour of $20,500 traded on a 38,000-dwt ex EC South America to the Continent, however opinion is very divided here with Owners still bullish. Across the Basin the Continent saw firmer levels with mid $20,000's for Handymax scrap, but the Mediterranean was subdued and lacking any impetus. Despite the Asian routes making positive returns today, it was also devoid of any meaningful activity or fixtures to better gauge real direction.
