WRITEUP
CAPESIZE
The market made a positive, if measured, start to the week, with sentiment remaining generally constructive across both basins despite limited early-week activity. The BCI 182 5TC index increased by $427 to close at $42,641. The C5 index edged up by 0.170 to $13.485, while the C3 index nudged 0.110 higher to $33.110, reflecting a market that continued to firm, albeit at a modest pace. In the Pacific, trading conditions were steady with three major miners active throughout the day. Early indications suggested one miner was bidding around $13.00 against offers at $13.50, while brokers generally reported offers in the mid-to-upper $13s. As the session progressed, reports emerged of a couple of miner fixtures concluded at $13.45, helping underpin the market despite the relatively slow start. The Atlantic also began the week on a steady, though slightly subdued, footing. Modern Capes on C3 were reportedly offered in the $35s, while older units continued to attract discounted levels. A noticeable lack of bids kept activity restrained, although underlying sentiment remained cautiously positive. Brent crude continued its upward move, approaching the $80 per barrel mark after renewed strikes in the Middle East heightened geopolitical tensions and revived concerns over potential energy supply disruptions.
PANAMAX
Quite a number of reported trades as the evidence of a late flurry of fixing on Friday for Indonesian coal emerged. Charterers having held off due to concerns over vessels prospects eventually covered multiple stems at the end of the week, taking many by surprise. As well are the reported trades, the Kypros Seas (77,128 2014) spot Bahodopi fixed via Indonesia redelivery South China with PPT but the rate was not disclosed and the Chang Yang Jin He (75,941 2001) Zhanjiang 14 July was said to have fixed at a rate in the high $12,000's and whilst there were not further details, it would make sense if this was another Indonesian coal trade. There was a few rumoured EC South America fixtures however details were lacking, the BBG Yongjiang (82,764 2024) Dung Quat 14-15 July was mentioned at $23,000 for the round voyage, however this appeared to be an inflated rate, the Ocean Lorry (75 2012) retroactive Maoming 26 Jun was said to be on subjects for the same route, and so was the KM Singapore (80,559 2013) open Vung Tau 18 July. Otherwise it was a typical Monday of collecting and waiting to see what direction the market would take. The Atlantic routes started the week slightly down, whilst the Asian routes returned marginal gains, and the 5TC avergae was down $19 at $20,254.
SUPRAMAX
A slow start to the week showed very little movement on the Index routes with the 11TC average only moving up $3 to $21,573. Oldendorff were reported as taking the Bright Kowa (63,686 2025) prompt in the Philippines for 4 to 6 months redelivery worldwide at $22,000 and there was a scarce report of a fronthaul from the East Mediterranean with the Amoy Apollo (63,573 2026) said to have fixed delivery Ukraine for a trip redelivery Indonesia with Reachy at $28,000. As many reported last week the backhaul and NoPac markets proved the underlying strength in Asia and the Amstel Lion (60,454 2016) ex dry dock Zhoushan 19 July was reported fixed for a trip to US Gulf intention steels at $14,500 for first 70 days, then $20,500 thereafter with PanOcean whilst the Tai Star (62,487 2016) ex dry dock Dongguan 11-12 July fixed with Centurion for the same direction with barites at $15,500. The SSI Daring II (64 2025) CJK 16-20 July was rumoured for a trip via NoPac redelivery Malaysia-Japan at $20,000 with Canpotex.
HANDYSIZE
A typically quiet start to the week, market activity kept to a minimum across both basins. The 7TC average finished the day down $21 at $16,445. In the Continent and Mediterranean activity was limited but sentiment remained firm with some routes posting marginal improvements. The Ferusa R (37,429 2014) was fixed for a trip from Safi to Bangladesh with fertilisers in the mid $15,000's by Allianz, while a 32,000-dwt vessel open West Africa was placed on subjects for a trip to the US Gulf at $14,000, although further details were not confirmed. In the South Atlantic and US Gulf overall sentiment appeared less optimistic, with limited demand and an influx of ballasters placing further pressure on rates. Meanwhile with limited fresh enquiry from Asia, the market showed little sign of improvement, with rates being recorded around last-done levels. On the period side the Emmanouil (28,240 2011) open Luanda 14–15 July was fixed for a short period at $11,500, although further details were not disclosed.
